⁃ First we will ask Lighthacker our own questions about the project and chat will be closed during this session.

Splinterlands is a trading card game that where gamers can play anytime, trade anytime, and earn every win. The cards are NFTs and the prizes are a mix of fungible and non-fungible tokens. We’ve played about 100M games, have 150k active accounts playing per day, and have registered over 500k people.

I think we really accel at engagement and interaction. There’s a number of projects that don’t offer much other than a graphical interface for staking cards. Here we have hundreds of cards, with many stats, tons of abilities, ever changing rules for combat, and a highly engaged community around the game. It’s super simple to play. You just pick a summoner and pick a few monsters, but knowing what to play is a very intense strategic decision and you only have ~2min to choose. Our guys love our game and talk about it non-stop.

We’re on the Hive blockchain so after you win a match you can make a blog about it and get paid.

Security is a must with such gaming projects and users want their accounts and wallets to be secure. How do you plan to provide the security infrastructure?

One of the first things we did as a project was build a tool like metamask that would work with our blockchain. Prior to this people were submitting their keys directly to websites which is the most insane thing I can think of. So, we built a tool called hive-keychain and it’s a password protected browser extension that holds your keys.
In addition to that we’ve done security audits.
People are trying to steal money from us and the game basically around the clock, and the best defense is a product that works as intended.

SPS is a governance token. It’s designed to give players input into the game. While the game isn’t completely decentralized now the plan is to get it there over time. users will literally be able to approve code changes to the game before it gets implemented. Individual cards can be buffed or nerfed. Rules can be changed or added. We’re trying to put the power into the hands of the players.
There’s promotions that only SPS token holders can get access to.
We want to run oracles and getting paid to run one will depend on the vote of token holders.
We want to see liquidity pools that are bigger and players will earn from staking in pools.
We’ll add it as a reward mechanism for the game when fighting.
Pretty soon we’ll add it as a payment method in the game

Playing such games on mobile devices can be a bit of a problem. What innovation does Splinterlands bring in this regard?

We have a mobile ready site, an android app, and an iphone app. I gotta say, getting the mobile stuff into the game is probably the hardest part. We have so much stuff happening in our game and trying to fit it all down so that it fits on a little screen is exceptionally difficult. So, we have the game on mobile, it is still missing a few features, but the joy is that you can play your account from anywhere.
I think it’s amazing to think about earning while playing a game while at work. I was travelling around in southeast asia and there were times where eveyrone was on their phone and there was no customers in the market. I imagine all of those store owners able to distract and entertain themselves with our game while waiting for folks to come in, but also to earn money while playing while times are slow.
The mobile phone I think is really empowering #playtoearn anywhere.

Tournaments come in all shapes and sizes. The lower ranked tournaments have smaller prize pools. The higher ranked tournaments have larger prize pool and it reflects the value of the cards being used to fight.

Everything in the game has a cost to stuff. These things have real world value. If you want to earn something for free than free to play games might be better, but keep in mind those things have literally no value.
So, yes in our game there are gates all throughout the game that limit what you can earn or do, but it’s uniform across all gamers. Everyone had to go through those steps. It’s part of what makes the game fun and the in game assets valuable.

Splinterlands has really been focused on scaling. We 10Xed in size just in August. We’re set to double in the next 21 days. So, there’s tons of growth. For the last little while all our development efforts have gone into scaling teh game. Even with 200k+ playinng accounts we’re still small by AAA studio sizes. So, there’s lot of room to grow, and lots of server changes to make to be able to scale that large.
